Subject
This impression complicates Frank E. Bliss's 1923 catalogue raisonné. Bliss claimed that only one ‘unique’ first state of this print existed. The label on the frame, from the well-known Edwardian print dealer Gutekunst, also claims that this is ‘Paysage 481 I’ and therefore this impression would be that unique first state. However, 481/I is reproduced as Plate CIII in Bliss's catalogue and significant differences can be seen between the light inking of the middle foreground in this example and the much heavier inking in the photographic reproduction. It is unlikely they are the same object.
