The Etchings of Sir Francis Seymour Haden, P.R.E., London, Halton & Truscott Smith, 1923
Subject
Between around 1870 and the mid-twentieth century the reputation of Francis Seymour Haden as the most significant of British printmakers was unquestionable and his works were highly sought after by the anglophone elite. Original impressions of his work commanded extravagantly high prices from dealers and were therefore inaccessible to all but the wealthiest collectors. The status and scarcity of Haden's etchings generated a demand for catalogues raisonné, critical publications and reproductions of his work in other media. One of the most prestigious of these initiatives was published in 1923 by Malcom Salaman, The Etchings of Sir Francis Seymour Haden, P.R.E. The format of the deluxe first edition was quite typical of high-status interwar art publictions (similar to those produced by The Studio). It was limited to 200 numbered copies and was presented with an envelope containing ‘16 Original Etchings’, These impressions were actually slightly-reduced photomechanical reproductions of Haden's work, complete with a small pseudo-Chinese blind stamp featuring an FSH monogram in a square cartouche. The sheet illustrated here and SO 0046 are both examples of Salaman's limited edition reproductions.
