Société des Aquafortistes. Eaux-fortes modernes. Oeuvres inédites et originales: quatrième année, quatrième volume: 1866
Subject
In the early 1860s Matthew White Ridley was a close associate of several progressive artists in London including James McNeill Whistler and Edwin Edwards and was respected enough as a modern etcher to be included the in third, fourth and fifth annual portfolios of Cadart et Luquet's Société des aquafortistes (1865, 1866, and 1867 respectively). North Dock's fascinated attention to the masts and spars of ships in dock was a theme shared by the contemporary etchings and paintings of Whistler, Edwards and Manet.
The sheet is without any lettering, suggesting that this impression was produced for the 1866 folio of the Société des Aquafortistes.
