Subject
The River Thames seen from the window of Whistler's house, looking south towards the village of Battersea and St Mary's Church. In the foreground are the river stairs, possibly to Chelsea Creek Pier with the silhouettes of waiting passengers. In the centre of the river a number of lighters are moored; these maybe associated with the coal depot on the south side of the river that features in Whistler's ‘nocturne’ paintings from the following decade or other industrial facilities including railway yards located on the Chelsea shore adjacent to the viewpoint.
Inscribed in the plate 'Old Chelsea, out of Whistler's window 1863'. Inscribed in pencil lower left outside the plate 'Seymour-Haden [script indesciptherable] 1864'
Printing
This is an impression of the plate taken from the Gazette des Beaux-Arts, Vol.XVII, p.274, 1863. The plate may have been printed by either Auguste Delâtre or Alfred Salmon.
