Subject

Portrait of Francis Seymour Haden's youngest child Arthur. This etching probably dates from February or March 1858 when Whistler and Haden were developing their practices in parallel, often needling plates side-by-side. Whistler's etching Little Arthur (1858) may well have been produced at the same moment as this image. This impression has two pencil inscriptions that may be in Haden's own hand: an indecipherable name ‘ Mr L- - - - -t or h’ (possibly ‘Jacquemart’?) and ‘Portrait of Arthur Haden’, as well a later dealer's notation at the bottom of the sheet ‘7 Essai Excessively Rare’.
