Subject
The title translates to ‘Harvesting Oats’. The print depicts a field worker stooped under the weight of the two sheaves he carries. Like so many of Legros' works, Récolte de l'Avoine suggests that such agricultural work is implacable and that the anonymous peasant's lifelong experience of suffering is to be understood as a transhistorical and unamendable form of necessity.
