Subject
The depicted scene is the Rue des Rosiers in Montmartre (not to be confused with the better-known street of the same name in the Marais). Rue des Rosiers was a significant location for the French artillery during the Siege of Paris but was subsequently partially erased by the construction of the Sacré-Cœur Basilica in the late 1870s. The remaining section became part of the Rue du Chavalier de la Barre. The subject is obscure; The details of the scene suggest that the action was contemporary but the atmosphere seems romantically nostalgic. A well-dressed woman leaves an address on the empty street in order to meet a waiting coach; her manner suggests some secrecy or subterfuge in involved.
