Subject
The only published state of this plate with much of the original composition, which originally depicted a female figure - probably Whistler's partner Joanne Heffernan - in the extreme right foreground and another crinolined female figure to the bottom left of the plate, now all burnished out. These earlier states of the plate seem to be a response to works by Whistler such as (the painting) Wapping (1864) and (the etching) Rotherhithe (1860-70, SO 0021). This plate and SO 0061 were begun on an excursion that Haden undertook with the French painter and etcher Charles-François Daubigny in 1865. Haden has included Daubigny's name and that of the French design historian and critic Philippe Burty on the signs of workshops in the middle distance.
